religion, tv, and the FCC…

the new hire over at the FCC was on the board of this group... which it seems has the goal of "...helping our members across the country bring Biblical principles into all levels of public policy.". Gotta love it. Here is more on that one...

Why? Why do someone else's values on things need to be pushed onto others? Why does one group get called 'phobic' and another 'religious' when they both harbor the same intolerance? And why does this have to be pushed onto something that is both voluntary and costs money, IE basic cable? If I pay for cable, and it is not broadcast on the free, then I am making a conscience decision to bring that programming into my life. Not to mention nearly all cable providers now have some form of channel lock, etc to keep children off certain channels. While I have never used such things due to a lack of need, but I am sure that once I am a parent, I will totally have a set of channels for my child to watch.

I don't care if you or yours don't like it, that isn't your decision to make. So keep your 'religious values' out of my life.

Dukes of Hazzard….

so there was nothing on TV last night, so I threw in the Dukes of Hazzard Season 1 DVD on the projector...

I love that show. Season 1 was 1979, so I was but a baby... but is was fun to watch.

Interesting points...

Violence... there wasn't THAT much... not compared to today. There are guns, but not used that often. The duke boys use bows because they can't have guns to their probation, but people don't often GET shot... just shot AT. There is some hand combat style, but...

Sex... I listened to the commentary between bo and daisy on the first episode, and they were talking about how Daisy NEVER had a love scene, and Bo had like 2 or 3 kisses or something, nothing like today.

Respect for the law.... interesting, but the interaction between the cops and bad guys is weird... obviously the duke boys don't have direct respect, but at the same time they do support and overall, respect them...

Patriarchal Jessie... Uncle Jessie is so such a strong father role... it is interesting to see the respect there...

They were talking about how they had a very small budget in the first 5 episodes (it was a mid season replacement show) and thus they had to make it work... funny little things... Most of the extras are family/friends/crew. The General Lee is dented up in a bunch of shots due to the jumping and whatnot. The early episodes were all shot on location, no sound stages at all. Stuff like that...

I was also curious to see how race was covered in a southern based show in the south in the late 70s, but there appears to be nothing I could find. While there are fewer non white characters, which is kinda how the show is setup, there were some black characters and they were treated the same...

Since I have a kid coming, I was looking at it from the perspective of children watching it, especially since I used to love the show, and I couldn't find too much wrong with it... But I'll keep thinking on that topic...

Overall, I enjoyed watching them so far. I haven't finished the entire season yet, but I will. I wonder if they will release the other seasons?

updateI just checked... Seasons 1-4 are all out... AND they finally released Knight Rider on DVD in Region 1. Score.
